Creating the ideal sleep environment: from crib to cosy cocoon
The right environment
Just like for adults, your baby's room should be a healthy space. It is therefore advisable to air the room after each nap and every morning. The temperature should be neither too warm nor too cold: between 18 and 20 °C is ideal. Finally, the air should be neither too dry nor too humid. The idea is to create a comfortable and safe little cocoon so that your baby can rest peacefully.
Breathable fabrics
Now that you have created a favourable environment, don't stop there! You also need to put your baby in the best conditions for sleep by choosing the right fabrics for their bodysuits, pyjamas, sheets, etc. Opt for breathable fabrics such as cotton, preferably organic, to avoid night wakings caused by sweating. Finally, choose outfits suited to the season: not too much, not too little. If in doubt, place your finger on the back of your baby's neck: if they are sweating, remove a layer.
The importance of a good crib and a good mattress
At Charlie Crane, the sleep of little ones is one of our main concerns. That is why we have created two wonderful cribs to help your baby fall asleep.
- The KUMI is a wooden crib for babies from 0 to 6 months, which gently rocks them with a lateral swinging motion. It moves from room to room and, thanks to its breathable and transparent fabric, reassures both parents and children alike.
- The KUKO is a reassuring Moses basket, ideal for newborns. With its breathable cotton jersey cover and its natural wood stand that gently follows every movement, the KUKO Moses basket guarantees newborns a peaceful and safe sleep.
A quality sleeping bag
Invest in a quality sleeping bag (you may even want two, as nappy leaks and little nighttime accidents do happen!). Choose one perfectly suited to your baby's age and stage of development. A little tip: the weighted sleeping bags from Dreamland Baby are truly magical. Thanks to their exclusive CoverCalm® technology, the weight is evenly distributed from your baby's shoulders to their feet, creating a soothing sensation, like a comforting hug. The result? Easier, longer and more restful sleep for baby and for you. No wonder parents talk about it as a real game-changer. And don't forget: always put your baby to sleep on their back.
A routine
With newborns, there is no routine in the strict sense. As a parent, however, you can already help them understand the cycles of day and night. How? By feeding them at set times, offering more stimulating activities in the morning and calmer ones before bedtime, exposing them to daylight during your daily walks, and scheduling naps at fixed times. On this point, it is really important to remember that there is no point in depriving a child of a daytime nap thinking they will catch up on sleep at night. Spoiler: it doesn't work! In fact, it's quite the opposite! A tired baby will fight sleep and have trouble falling asleep…
Finally, adopt a soothing bedtime routine and always follow the same order: feeding, bath, bedtime story, cuddles, lullaby as you wish… By repeating these steps every day, your baby will feel safe and calm, ready to fall asleep on their own.
Please note: avoid letting your child fall asleep at the breast or with a bottle, and make sure to put your baby to bed while they are still awake.
Darkness
To help your baby understand the day/night cycle, the room should be completely dark at bedtime. We therefore recommend investing in electric shutters or blackout curtains. By creating darkness, you encourage the production of melatonin, the sleep hormone… So say goodbye to night lights for little ones, as they are not — yet — afraid of the dark, at least until the age of 2. Naps can take place in soft but natural light, so that your baby understands they are napping and that it is daytime.
White noise
Many parents fall into the trap of avoiding the slightest noise so their baby can nap or fall asleep at night. But they forget that babies spend nine months in their mother's womb, living with the vibrations around them! Familiar sounds are reassuring, so don't stop yourself from going about your daily activities while your baby falls asleep. Finally, white noise is very popular with newborns: investing in a dedicated product can help relax your baby and make falling asleep easier. These sounds, similar to a heartbeat for example, are sound frequencies of the same intensity that are reminiscent of the in utero sound environment. They have a naturally soothing, rocking effect… Give it a try!
Avoiding overstimulation
And if possible, carve out a quiet moment to encourage relaxation before bedtime. Cortisol, which we hear so much about, is the stress hormone: the higher its level, the less likely a child is to fall asleep peacefully. Avoid overstimulating your child with games before bedtime and try to help them relax as much as possible: cuddles, massage, gentle lullabies, reading… Wind down quietly together.
Finally, all babies can wake up during the night. They may wake up to be fed, to be reassured, because they are ill, because they have lost their pacifier or because they are looking for it. When your child cries at night, avoid automatically offering the breast or a bottle. Stay calm, reassure them, and take the time to understand what they need.
In conclusion, sleep is obviously crucial, for children and parents alike. Keep in mind that, when it comes to children's sleep, nothing is ever set in stone. Be patient and attentive to your baby, and everything will be fine!
