Just a few more weeks before meeting your baby! Whether you're a master of organization or a fan of improvisation, preparing the newborn layette will save you a lot of stress during your first steps as parents. It's a moment full of emotions, where it's lovely to picture yourself feathering your nest for your baby. But what exactly should go in that famous hospital bag? Charlie Crane puts together the list of essentials for the big day and the journey home!

At the maternity ward

You're entering your 7th month of pregnancy: it's the right time to start preparing the newborn layette. It's a matter of organization, of course, but it's also a joyful moment where you can easily picture your baby wiggling in their bouncer in their first outfits. Here is our list:

Layette

  • 6 to 8 pajamas,
  • 6 to 8 bodysuits (preferably cotton for winter and terry cloth for summer),
  • 2 to 3 woolen jackets,
  • 1 pair of mittens (to prevent the baby from scratching themselves)
  • 1 to 3 newborn hats (to help them regulate their body temperature),
  • 2 pairs of booties or socks,
  • 1 to 2 sleep sacks,
  • 3 to 4 swaddle blankets,
  • 1 blanket or cocoon sleeping bag (for the day of discharge, in the car),
  • 1 to 2 pacifiers and 1 pacifier clip (in case they have a need to suck)

What size to choose for clothing?

For a full-term baby, we recommend planning for size 1 month. For premature babies, you can mix in newborn or size 0. The key is that they are comfortable and easy to fasten!

At home

Bath time

  • The NOGA changing table (practical and stylish: storage, space-saving and comfort for diaper changes),
  • 2 to 3 packs of newborn diapers,
  • 1 shampoo, 1 baby cleansing gel, dermatological moisturizing cream, saline solution,
  • Reusable cotton pads,
  • Liniment,
  • 1 soft-bristle hairbrush,
  • 1 thermometer (to have on hand in case of fever, restlessness, loss of appetite…)
  • A soft towel

Feeding

If you plan to feed your baby with infant formula:

  • 2 to 4 large bottles,
  • 1 bottle brush,
  • At least 8 pacifiers,
  • 4 to 6 bibs

The nursery

  • The KUKO moses basket,
  • The KUMI cradle,
  • 4 to 6 KUMI fitted sheets,
  • 1 blanket,
  • 1 baby monitor,
  • The LEVO bouncer and its activity arch (the must-have from 0 to 7 months so your baby can follow you everywhere in comfort),
  • The NAHO activity arch, ideal with the super soft and comfortable TAMI play mat

The essentials you might not think of

Discover an immaterial list, which is less often talked about, but just as important. A blend of medical, mental and lifestyle essentials:

  • A trusted pediatrician: you'll be seeing them regularly in the first few months, so it's worth choosing one you feel comfortable with.
  • A nanny: someone you can entrust your baby to with complete peace of mind.
  • A babywearing / baby massage class: which wrap to use, what positions and movements, the benefits…
  • An attentive ear that won't judge you: essential for venting when you've had enough.
  • An Instagram filter: useful for avoiding the belief that perfect motherhood and perfect mothers exist!

Yes, babies are small but require a lot of things, space and attention. You now have all the keys to welcoming your little one with peace of mind. But above all, trust yourself. While some things need to be planned ahead, the rest will come naturally.
