New: the KUKO moses basket by Charlie Crane!
How did the idea for the moses basket come about?
This idea had been on our minds for a long time. We have a baby bed, an evolving cot, a cradle… A moses basket was missing! The first version of the KUKO was in the pipeline at Mum and Dad Factory, of which we are the publisher. We reworked the design to make it reproducible and to give it a removable cover. We love combining design with practicality.
What does a Charlie Crane version of a moses basket look like?
We added handles so it can be carried. The stand was designed by Gaspard Tiné-Berès, our head of the design department, in collaboration with Mum & Dad. It seemed important to us to add rocker-shaped feet. Much like our KUMI cradle, the KUKO gently rocks babies. This age-old motion helps them have sweet dreams (but not full 8-hour nights!!).
Our signature is also about paying attention to materials and production. Gaspard revisited our favourite material, wood, and gave it curved shapes. The wood is raw beech. The basket's cotton is organic. Our materials are natural, our manufacturing is French. We want beautiful and good!
Now let's talk about the design process… How much time is needed between the idea and the market launch?
All in all, it takes just over a year and a half! That is the time needed to finalise every detail of the design. We make many prototypes until we achieve the perfect product. Furthermore, products for babies must pass tests in order to meet specific standards. The KUKO obviously meets cradle standards… to which we add our own requirements, such as organic textiles and French manufacturing.
The KUKO moses basket joins its friends KUMI, KIMI, NOGA… Where do Charlie Crane names come from?
We want short names that are easy to remember. We work with a simple system of two syllables made up of a consonant followed by a vowel, and so on. Then we draw up a list of suggestions for the team and… put it to a vote! These meetings lead to some intense moments!
What makes KUKO special compared to other moses baskets?
Beyond its refined aesthetic, it is more comfortable for the baby and safer than a traditional or wicker moses basket. The integrated mattress has a very pleasant thickness for the little one. The foam is firm, honeycomb-structured and therefore very breathable for babies.
If needed, it has a removable, easily washable cover. Between its high sides and the stand, it is very secure. It combines the advantages of a moses basket that can be moved at will and a rocking stand cradle. Two products in one…
