How to Travel Peacefully With a Baby

Whether you’ve already booked your tickets or you’re still hesitating, here are all our parent-approved tips to help you travel as easily as possible with a little one. Spoiler: with a bit of organization and the right essentials, it’s much easier than you think.

How to Travel Peacefully With a Baby

Traveling With a Baby: Great Idea or Totally Crazy?

No need to panic, quite the opposite! Traveling with a baby is actually a great idea. Why? Because little ones are flexible, they adapt to your rhythm, sleep a lot, and let’s be honest… they’re not giving their opinion yet!

As they grow, babies start crawling, wanting to explore everything, touching anything within reach… It becomes just as wonderful, but definitely more of a workout!

What matters most is this: traveling with a child, no matter their age, opens their eyes to the world. It creates incredible memories for you (and photos for them), stimulates their senses, and honestly,  it’s a win for everyone.

When Can I Start Traveling With My Baby?

There’s no official minimum age for traveling with a newborn. Starting at 7 days old, a baby can go almost anywhere, that’s the minimum age required for flying.

That said, we wouldn’t recommend heading off to super adventurous destinations right away…

There are a few precautions to take:

– Vaccinations

There are quite a few early on! It’s best to stay close to proper medical care and make sure your baby is allowed to travel with their vaccine schedule up-to-date. For tropical destinations, ask for advice,  before age 2, it can be tricky depending on the country.

– Time difference

It’s not dangerous at all, but keep in mind that your baby (and you!) may still be figuring out a good sleep rhythm. If possible, choose a destination in a similar time zone so your trip truly feels like vacation!

– Adventure

We say yes to adventure, with a medical facility reasonably nearby. Travel always comes with surprises, so plan ahead. Also, avoid high altitudes: above 1,500 meters (4,900 ft), breathing can be more difficult for babies.

Choosing the Right Mode of Transportation

As we mentioned, baby can fly starting at 7 days old, and can travel by car or train from the day you leave the maternity ward.

Whatever you choose, we recommend starting with an easy destination that requires only a few hours of travel. As the saying goes: baby steps!

Traveling by Plane

Usually, babies travel for free on your lap, but you can buy an extra seat and install a baby car seat there. Be sure to check your airline’s rules,  they’re strict and vary by company.

You can often keep your stroller up to the aircraft door if it’s compact, which is a huge bonus. Some airports even offer family-only lines,  hallelujah! Many also have baby-friendly areas or nurseries.

A little tip for takeoff and pressure changes:
Have your baby suck (breast, bottle, pacifier) to prevent ear pain.

Traveling by Car

This is the easiest option: you choose the schedule, the stops, the route… And you can bring everything without worrying about luggage limits.

Best tip? Leave during nap time, and use a car seat that connects to your stroller (like the amazing Doona stroller we mention below!)

Traveling by Train

Train travel is free for children under 4 if they sit on your lap, and still affordable otherwise.

We recommend booking a “family” area for comfort and easy access to the baby-changing space. And the dining car can warm up a baby jar or even a bottle if needed.

Two Must-Have Items for Traveling With a Baby

– The incredible Doona stroller

A total game changer for traveling parents: a stroller and car seat in one! Lightweight, compact, super easy to use, it works for planes, trains, and cars for babies up to 13 kg (28 lbs).

– Our KUKO bassinet

Ideal for traveling! Okay, it won’t fit on a plane, but on a train it offers amazing comfort for baby. Designed for home, but incredibly practical for naps, diaper changes, or simply keeping baby cozy in their little cocoon. Parent-tested, parent-approved (#experience).

The Essential Diaper Bag

Baby needs a bag just for them, including:

  • Muslin cloths or a Charlie Crane blanket (burp cloth, comforter, scarf, lovey… perfect for everything! Soft, eco-friendly, easy to wash).

  • Diapers

  • Wipes

  • A change of clothes (always!)

  • A bottle and milk if needed

  • Sanitizer

  • Health booklet

  • Snacks like pouches or jars if baby has started solids

  • Baby Tylenol, saline solution…

  • The lovey

  • Sunscreen

  • A few toys (preferably ones they haven’t seen in a while for the “surprise” effect)

Final tip: Always overpack a little! You never know what might happen…
