Charlie Crane x MUES Design: the revisited Vichy collection

What if we told you the story behind our latest new arrivals? When two decoration enthusiasts meet, a beautiful collaboration is never far away… That is precisely what happened when our team met Mélissa and Valentine, the two sisters who founded MUES Design. From now on, Charlie Crane is featuring a sublime light and timeless gingham on its iconic pieces! On the occasion of this launch, we spoke with the creators. They look back on the trends and the best patterns to adopt in your children's room, as well as their journey as women entrepreneurs.
Charlie Crane x MUES Design : la colection Vichy revisitée

Why will Charlie Crane fans love our collaboration?

Charlie Crane has chosen our Vichy Brigitte pattern. Vichy checks are timeless and refined. The vichy pattern is therefore perfect for a child's room — it brings, with a great deal of softness, a lovely little touch of elegance.

This gingham also has a small modern twist that makes it a pattern suited for little ones… who will grow up! The motif was first worked in ink to achieve a watery, soft look. The play of overlapping stripes, characteristic of gingham, thus became transparent, lighter and more subtle. To create this pattern, we preferred to work freehand, without a guide, in order to achieve spontaneous, discreet and natural irregularities.

Your wallpaper is available for pre-order — why do you offer this system?

We actually have no stock at all! That has been Mues Design's policy from the very beginning. First of all, it allows us to release whatever we want — we set no limits for ourselves, we can satisfy more people. Then, no stock means no unsold items, and therefore… no waste! You have to wait 2 to 3 weeks to receive your Charlie Crane X Mues Design wallpaper, but it will be of high quality and its impact on the planet will remain limited.

Why is it important to create a beautiful room for your children?

We all have in mind a wallpaper, curtain or duvet pattern that accompanied us throughout our childhood. The bedroom is an important place that plays a full role in a child's development! While decorating a baby's room can be obvious for some — sometimes even before pregnancy — it can become a real headache for others…

What are your recommendations for beautiful baby room decor?

Often, parents want a decor that is both beautiful and timeless. Gingham ticks all those boxes. We also generally recommend the stripes of our Auguste and Ernest wallpapers and the gradients of our Séraphine or Yvonne ranges. Very simple and light floral patterns can also be a good option, such as our models Côme, Thelma, Izia, Octave or even Clémence, Raphaëlle and Louise

Are you for or against color in a baby's room?

Don't be afraid of color — applied in small touches, colors always give a cheerful and playful feel to a room. It can be in an alcove, behind shelves, above a dado rail… When you feel lost, the simplest approach is always to start from a first element you have already chosen — a crib, a chair, a throw — and then find the right combinations.

Now, let's talk about light — what are your tips on lighting?

It is also important to take the light in the room into account. Colors that are too cool are less suited to interiors with little natural light. Moreover, we never recommend ceiling lights, which are often too cold and harsh — small, low, dimmed light sources, when there are enough of them, are much prettier and just as effective!

How was Mues Design born?

Mélissa: The Mues Design brand was born almost 10 years ago. I was coming out of my first professional experiences as a graphic designer. Not only did I want to start a business and create my own venture, but I also wanted to be able to create freely. I created Mues Design as a duo with another person. The first collections launched were very well received. However, we preferred to end our partnership, as we had different visions… I wanted to continue the adventure with my sister Valentine. Her communication-focused profile (among other things) was perfect for continuing to develop Mues Design.

Valentine: I was living abroad when I joined the adventure! That forced us to adopt a method, to plan everything… good working foundations right from the start! I was living far from my family and Mues Design gave me a daily connection with my little sister. Mélissa has always been very creative. The idea of working with her excited me! Like Mélissa, I have always loved decoration. Our mother was an ornamentalist and our father a cabinetmaker — we have always been immersed in every style, every era.

Before being a business partner, you are first a sister. Is it easy to work with family?

Mélissa: I find it pleasant and rewarding! Day-to-day life is quite simple — we truly trust each other. Our partnerships are an excellent way to temporarily bring a third person into the adventure and to step outside of what we already know and master.

Valentine: I would never have thought I'd work with family one day, and yet it has become my main driving force! I feel a great joy in sharing our successes, and a natural ease in facing challenges together. Communication is easy and immediate. We don't filter our moods as much as when working with "normal" colleagues. We tell each other everything, right away, and it can end in an argument! But it is also very efficient and within the family, we always forgive each other! It is also easier to work with someone who shares the same values and the same references. The risk would be not being able to disconnect, even at a family lunch…

Thank you to Mélissa and Valentine for their time.

And by the way, what is non-woven paper? It is a wallpaper that is stronger and more durable than woven wallpaper. It is easier to handle and difficult to tear.
