Making Room for Baby: A Meaningful Milestone

When you’re expecting a child, a kind of magic happens: little by little, room opens up for baby at home, in your relationships, at work and even in your mind.

Faire de la place à bébé, tout un symbole

You’ve probably noticed that when you’re expecting a child, a kind of magic happens: little by little, room opens up for baby at home, in your relationships, at work and even in your mind. These changes and preparations can happen without you even realizing it! So let’s take a closer look at this first step toward parenthood.

1 - Making room… At home

This is where the expression “making room” takes on its full meaning and makes baby’s arrival feel real. Whether you live in a house or an apartment, at some point this little baby, still growing in the womb, will call for changes to your home.

At Charlie Crane, it’s fair to say we know this area pretty well! For more than ten years, we’ve helped expectant parents through this stage, and we’ve come to know the questions they ask: How should we arrange the sleeping area? Where can we put a changing table in a small space? That’s how the NOGA changing table was born! How can we give baby a place to sleep anywhere in the house, at any time? Our collection of bassinets and cradles meets the needs of every family.

Making room at home means rearranging rooms, clearing shelves or setting aside space for a new dresser. It means preparing storage and thinking about baby’s safety… But getting organized also means sorting through things! Your belongings, your knickknacks, your books—and that’s symbolic, too. You let go of what you don’t need to make way for the child to come. Parents often describe it as building a nest. Because yes, however tiny your child may be, their needs will be big!

2 - Making room… In your mind and daily life

Every parent will tell you: it helps to plan ahead for how you’ll manage your time so you don’t feel overwhelmed. Your relationship, friendships, work and even family ties, along with time for yourself—all these parts of everyday life will be shaken up for a while. Knowing that and preparing for it gives you a better chance of welcoming baby with peace of mind.

To make room for baby during those first weeks at home, you can set aside some time together beforehand. Think about whether family or friends could help, how you’ll divide household chores and arrange childcare, and how you’ll occasionally make time together as a couple. It’s also worth planning time alone, so you can come home feeling more at ease.

Finally, nutrition plays a crucial role during the postpartum period. Why not plan healthy, nourishing meals, broths and soups to keep in the freezer for the long weeks ahead, when grocery shopping and cooking with seasonal ingredients may be difficult to manage?

Did you know? A pregnant woman’s brain literally prepares for the arrival of a child—a phenomenon commonly called “mommy brain.” Pregnant women often find themselves searching for words or forgetting things… These symptoms are linked to the profound fatigue of pregnancy, but also to neurological changes. Nature is pretty remarkable, isn’t it?

3 - Making room… Symbolically

Finally, how could we not talk about making room in a symbolic sense? Changes begin even before a child is born. As we’ve seen, the expectant mother’s body is working day and night to nurture the baby, demanding both mental and physical energy. This inevitably affects the couple, who begin preparing to become parents rather than just partners. Pregnancy can also reshape relationships across generations of a family, sometimes bringing tensions or conflicts to the surface. And if you already have a child, you help them prepare for their brand-new role as an older sibling.

In the end, making room step by step, both practically and symbolically, is a way to prepare for your new role as a parent. It means knowing that baby will find their own place—not necessarily the one you pictured. That’s the beauty of parenthood!
