How did the idea for the bassinet come about?

This idea had been in the back of our minds for a long time. We have a cot, an evolving bed, a cradle... What was missing was a bassinet! The first version of the KUKO was in the boxes of Mum and Dad Factory, of which we are the publisher. We reworked the design to make it reproducible and removable. We like to combine design and practicality.

What does a Charlie Crane bassinet look like?

We've added handles for easy transport. The stand was designed by Gaspard Tiné-Berès, our head of design, in consultation with Mum & Dad. We felt it was important to add legs in the shape of a pendulum. A bit like our KUMI cradle, the KUKO rocks babies. This age-old movement helps them to have sweet dreams (but not full 8-hour nights!!).

Our signature is also our attention to materials and production. Gaspard has taken our favorite material, wood, and given it curved forms. The wood is raw beech. The cotton in the bassinet is organic. Our materials are natural, our manufacturing is French. We want beautiful and good!

Let's talk design now... How long does it take from idea to market launch?

In all, it takes just over a year and a half! That's how long it takes to finalize all the design details. We make numerous prototypes until we have the perfect product. In addition, baby products have to pass tests to obtain specific standards. The KUKO obviously passes the cradle standards... to which we add our own requirements, such as organic textiles or French manufacturing.

The KUKO bassinet joins its friends KUMI, KIMI, NOGA... Where do the Charlie Crane names come from?

We want short names that are easy to remember. We work with a simple system of two syllables made up of a consonant then a vowel, and so on. Then we make a list of proposals to the team and... we vote! These meetings make for intense moments!

What makes KUKO different from other baskets?

As well as being aesthetically pleasing, it's more comfortable for baby and safer than a conventional or straw bassinet. The integrated mattress has a thickness that is very comfortable for the little one. The foam is firm, honeycombed and therefore highly breathable for babies.

If necessary, it can be removed from its cover and easily washed. Its high edges and base make it very secure. It combines the advantages of a Moses basket that can be moved as desired and a free-standing cradle that rocks the child. Two products in one...
