Helping baby sleep despite the heat: our tips

Faire dormir bébé malgré la chaleur : nos conseils

Summer has only just begun and it's already shaping up to be a very hot one! In the face of these intense weather conditions, those who suffer the most are the elderly, the ill, pregnant women and… babies. And yes, as you may know, babies cannot yet regulate their temperature well. It will take one or two years for this to improve. So, in the face of heatwaves, here are a few tips for gentler naps and nights.

1 - Choosing the right mattress

It may seem trivial, but choosing a good mattress can make all the difference in both winter and summer. The organic coconut mattress, for example, benefits from a naturally airy structure. It therefore eliminates moisture… Particularly practical for those hot summer nights.

The coconut mattress is also hypoallergenic, ideal for baby's sensitive skin. With firm support, it is also fully compatible with the morphological development of toddlers. Natural latex, meanwhile, is also a great summer companion thanks to micro-perforations, making it a breathable material.

It therefore offers good thermal regulation during the night. Ultra comfortable and naturally form-fitting due to its firmness, it is slightly heavier than a coconut mattress but ultra healthy with excellent support.

2 - The importance of (organic!) cotton

Choosing a good mattress is great, but pairing it with organic cotton sheets is even better! And even before that, a good mattress protector in sponge and bamboo viscose guarantees protection against moisture while remaining breathable, gentle on the skin, and durable. The choice of materials is crucial for baby, for the planet, and even more so in times of intense heat.

Cotton is widely favoured, and if it is organic, it is naturally even better for the planet. But why all the enthusiasm? Well, because synthetic fabrics have an unfortunate tendency to cause sweating. Moreover, they can be irritating, particularly for young and sensitive skin like that of babies.

At Charlie Crane, the fitted sheets for our mattresses are made from organic cotton to allow air to circulate freely, absorb baby's perspiration, for ease of washing even at low temperatures, and of course for their incredible softness.

3 - A breathable material

As you will have gathered, baby needs as much air as possible. For sleep, in addition to choosing a good mattress, sheets and a cotton bodysuit, you can also opt for a bed that breathes. We think in particular of the KUMI cradle, which features a mesh cocoon — a brilliant fabric that allows ventilation during sleep. Note that this cotton is detachable and machine washable.

Another alternative, the KIMI convertible cot also features this same mesh fabric designed as a cocoon. Baby is therefore wrapped in comfort while naturally having airflow to sleep in the best conditions.

These tips are of course accompanied by many other basic recommendations:

  • Good ventilation in the room, either early in the morning or late in the evening

  • Dress baby in natural materials, preferably loose-fitting

  • Favour cotton (organic if possible) such as our muslin cloths (and our blankets for cool evenings, for the lucky ones)

  • Close the shutters during the day to keep the room as cool as possible

  • Up to 6 months, regularly offer milk or breastfeed baby to ensure good hydration, then later water, herbal tea, watermelon, cucumber…

  • Do not point a fan directly at baby's bed

  • Cool baby down with a damp flannel or a cloth at room temperature (never ice cold)

  • Offer a lukewarm bath

With all these recommendations, you give yourself every chance
of enjoying summer naps and a deep, restful sleep!

The whole Charlie Crane team wishes you a wonderful summer…
